Ethiopian pro cyclist Tsgabu Grmay resumed his 2020 racing season by competing in the 2020 Gran Trittico Lombardo one-day race from Legnano to Varese earlier today, where his Mitchelton Scott teammate Dion Smith from New Zealand claimed a top-20 finish.

The 202km race in northern Italy was Tsgabu’s first competitive outing in over 5 months following the suspension of racing on the UCI circuit due to the COVID-19 pandemic and took place in atrocious conditions, resulting in several crashes. Only 52 of the 146 starters completed the race, with Tsgabu one of more than 90 riders not to finish.  Spanish rider Gorka Izagirre (Astana) won the race.

Earlier this year in February Tsgabu finished 80th at the Tour of Valencia and 60th at the UAE Tour. Since then Tsgabu has been training in his home city of Mekelle.

Strict measures have been in place within the pro peleton to minimise the risk of virus transmission. During the past week Tsgabu had to secure two negative COVID-19 tests to be allowed to travel to Italy from his base in Girona where he was training for the past two weeks.
