More than 60 cooks and guides across Ethiopia who have seen their incomes slashed by the COVID-19 pandemic will each receive around 7,500 birr as the result of a charity bike ride staged in North Showa Zone in Ethiopia last Saturday.

The event came about through a collaborative effort among four Ethiopian tour operators including Ethio Cycling Holidays and saw more than fifty riders take part in the ride from near the village of Gachini in Afar Region to the town of Ankober in Amhara Region. In total around 480,000 birr was raised for needy families working in tourism across Ethiopia most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to funds collected from participant entry fees, the event was supported by seven major hotels in Ethiopia who donated auction prizes and by participants raising money through individual sponsorship.

The event was also closely supported by Tourism Ethiopia whose CEO Sileshi Girma attended the event and presented prizes at the post-event lunch held at Ankober Palace Lodge.
