With our Operations Team in Mekelle we are ready to customise a solo tour to your needs and interests. Some of our solo tour clients like to take more time exploring the local sights of the region; others have more specific training goals in mind. You will be accompanied on your ride by our motorbike guide who will travel with you and carry your luggage for the duration of your ride. We therefore ask you to use a light day pack for the days when you will not have full vehicle support.

Itinerary: 10 days in Ethiopia | 6 days cycling | Total 508km | 4 rest / sightseeing days

We aim to get you to Mekelle, the starting point for your tour, as quickly and efficiently as possible. To do this, you will have to take a short connecting flight from Addis Ababa to Mekelle; which flight you take will depend on your international flight arrival time. You will be met on arrival at Mekelle airport and taken to your guest house in Mekelle. This will give you time for some food and rest, before you assemble your bike and – tiredness permitting – go out for a short test ride before evening dinner.

Overnight stay at Parrot Guest House in Mekelle

After taking breakfast in your hotel, you set out on the road leading north towards Eritrea. Following a tough 5km climb as you leave town you get to enjoy some stunning descents into Agula and Wukro. After checking into your hotel and having some food, there is time to visit one of the nearby rock-hewn churches with one of our local guides

Ride distance: 48km

Overnight stay at Wukro Lodge

Soon after leaving Wukro you start the 8km climb up to Negash where Ethiopia’s first mosque was built in the 7th century. Thereafter the gradients become easier but the road still undulates through Frewenyi and Idaga Hamus until you reach the final 10km descent into Adigrat. Tonight you will eat out at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant.

Ride distance: 72km

Overnight stay at Canaan International Hotel

You rise early ahead of your longest ride and after breakfast in the hotel set off on the road going west to Adwa. This opening section comprises a challenging 12km climb (5-10% gradient) to the summit at just over 3000m followed by a breath-taking 20km descent into Bizet where you make your first stop. Over the next 20km, as the jagged Adwa Mountains come into view, the road undulates until you reach Enticho where you stop for lunch. There are more climbs ahead on the road to Adwa and on the final stretch into Axum.

Ride distance: 130km

Overnight stay at Armah Hotel in Axum

You have a rest day today and time to enjoy some of the treasures of Ethiopia’s ancient capital, Axum. The main sights of Axum date from the 4th to the 13th century, the most impressive being the royal tombs and the monolith obelisks, known as stelae. One of our guides accompanies you to visit the stelae park, the Queen of Sheba’s bathing pool, and the Tsion Mariam Church (Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion) where, according to legend, the Ark of the Covenant is kept.

Overnight stay at Armah Hotel in Axum

Today you head back down the hill to Adwa and then turn south on the newly-built road back to Mekelle. The middle part of the ride through Maykenitil is largely downhill on snaking roads and through mountain passes. After crossing the river at the foot of the valley you climb for 12km (10-15% gradient) towards Workamba cresting several false summits before a short descent into the town. From there you transfer by vehicle to Gheralta Lodge.

Ride distance: 100km

Overnight stay at Gheralta Lodge in Hawzen

Today gives you chance to see one of the region’s spectacular rock-hewn churches – Abune Yemata, sometimes called the world’s most inaccessible church. The start of the walk comes after a short drive from the lodge and takes you to a near perpendicular ascent up a cliff face. The ledge that makes up the final approach overlooks a sheer and quite spectacular drop of 200m. After viewing the church’s highly decorated interior, you return to the lodge for some food and relaxation.

Overnight stay at Gheralta Lodge in Hawzen

Leaving Gheralta Lodge after breakfast you drive on the dirt road to Wukro where you stop for coffee. Ahead of you is a 50km ride back to Mekelle, retracing your steps from earlier in the tour.

Ride distance: 48km

Overnight stay at Parrot Guest House in Mekelle

Your final ride takes you out on a road used by scores of local young cyclists in Mekelle heading out west to the town of Hagere Selam. Turning round after a halfway stop, you enjoy one of the best road descents in Tigray as you sweep back down to Mekelle. Returning to your hotel by mid-afternoon gives you time for a shower and food before heading to the airport in the early evening for your flight back to Addis Ababa.

Ride distances: 110km

Overnight stay at Beer Garden Inn in Addis Ababa

In the morning you take a guided city tour which includes a visit to one of the city’s famous weaver workshops. In the afternoon you will have some free time for some last-minute market visits and souvenir shopping. Later in the evening you transfer to the airport for your overnight flight home.
