7-day tour for school groups and charities

Ethio Cycling Holidays 7-day tour
Tour dates:

By arrangement

Tour price: from £1195 per person

Minimum number for this tour: 12

This tour would be designed around the needs and specific interests of your group. In our suggested itinerary you have the opportunity to combine visits to projects supported by your school or charity with the adventure of riding at the epicentre of Ethiopia’s cycling culture. The rides are broken up into stages with two short stages taking places on both the second and third day of riding. Separate stages allow the ride to be completed in pairs or as a small team. This tour has comprehensive support from the planning stage of your trip and includes a celebratory meal and day’s sightseeing in Addis Ababa at the end of the trip.

Itinerary: 7 days in Ethiopia | 3 days cycling | Total distance 315km | 3 days sightseeing

On arrival in Addis Ababa off your overnight flight, you get a taste of the bustle of life in Ethiopia’s capital as you take breakfast in a nearby hotel. Returning to the airport for your connecting flight to Mekelle, you then transfer by vehicle to Gheralta Lodge, a couple of hours’ drive from the airport. In the afternoon you will have time to assemble and test out your bike as you prepare for the start of the ride on the following morning. A tour briefing follows before evening dinner.

Overnight stay at Gheralta Lodge

Your opening ride is on a beautifully peaceful stretch of road heading west along the chain of the Gheralta Mountains. The first 20km is mainly downhill and takes you through village settlements. Don’t be surprised if you see more animals (including camels) on the road than vehicles. There are some undulations in the last section of the ride as you get nearer to Workamba. For those with energy to spare an afternoon café ride into Abbi Adiy is possible later.

Ride distance: 65km

Overnight stay at Workamba Hotel

This is your big cycling day with two stages planned in each half of the day. It’s possible to share the two rides with a riding partner. You rise early and ride out, climbing the hill heading north towards Adwa. A superb 12km descent follows down into the valley after which you climb again towards Maykenitil and up to the switchback summit – a great place for a photo. On the way back you make a café stop in Maykenitil before tackling the long hill back to Workamba. Your overnight hotel in Abiy Addi lies 15km further along this road.

Ride distances: 70km to Aba Garima summit and 85km return to Abiy Addi

Overnight stay at Maylomin Botanical Garden Lodge

Your third and final day of cycling is divided into two stages with the harder ride taking place in the morning from Abiy Addi to Hagere Selam. This section includes a challenging climb with switchbacks just past the halfway point. After a stop in Hagere Selam comes one of the best road descents in Tigray as you sweep down towards Mekelle.

Ride distances: 40km to Hagere Selam and 55km to Mekelle

Overnight stay at Hatse Yohannes Hotel in Mekelle

This day is given over for visits to the projects supported by your school or charity. The day ends with a celebration meal back in Mekelle.

Overnight stay at Hatse Yohannes Hotel in Mekelle

Your final day in Mekelle starts at a more leisurely pace. After breakfast in the hotel, you transfer to the airport for your flight to Addis Ababa. In the afternoon you take a sightseeing tour of the city, followed by an evening dinner at one of the city’s traditional Ethiopian restaurants.

Overnight stay at Beer Garden Inn in Addis Ababa

In the morning you have chance to visit one of the city’s famous weaver workshops. Your afternoon is at your own leisure to give you time for some last-minute market visits and souvenir shopping. Later in the evening you transfer to the airport for your overnight flight home.

Room at Beer Garden Inn in Addis Ababa is included for your final night.
